All the moments of a year to remember

From the 5-0 win over Parma until the 2-2 draw at Bologna, 2020 has been a long, intense, difficult year, but that, in terms of football, has given great satisfaction. A year in which Atalanta have reached historic milestones. Let’s relive all the moments to remember month by month.

JANUARY

  • 6/1: the first match of 2020 and the second 5-0 in a row in the league. After Milan in the last match of 2019, Parma gives up at the Gewiss Stadium after the goals of Gomez, Freuler, Gosens and a brace from Iličić. It’s the first time in the history of Serie A the team win two games in a row with such a result.
  • 25/1: the Nerazzurri win 7-0 at the Turin Stadium with the hat-trick of Iličić, the double of Muriel and the goals of Gosens and Zapata. It is the biggest victory achieved in a match of Serie A in the history of the Club.

FEBRUARY

  • 8/2: away 2-1 victory over Fiorentina with the goals scored by Zapata and Malinovskyi. The Nerazzurri players defeat Firenze for the first time since 1993.
  • 16/2: Roma are defeated by 2-1 at the Gewiss Stadium. After the equaliser of Palomino, the goal of Pašalić comes as a flash of lightning after only 19 seconds from coming off the bench, (12 after resuming the game).
  • 19/2: At the Meazza Stadium in Milan during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 Atalanta historically beat Valencia 4-1, thanks to Hateboer’s double and Iličić’s and Freuler’s goals.

MARCH

  • 1/3: in Lecce for the third time in the same campaign Atalanta win the game by scoring seven goals. At the Via del Mare it ends 7-2 with the hat-trick of Zapata and the goals of Iličić, Muriel, Malinovskyi (plus an own goal).
  • 10/3: another win against Valencia, this time away by 4-3 in the second leg of the round of 16. Here the Nerazzurri historically qualify for the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. Iličić also sets a new record, as he becomes the first player in the history of the competition to have scored four goals in an away knockout match. The Slovenian star will then donate the match ball to the Papa Giovanni XXIII Hospital in Bergamo. It is the last match played before the halt due to the health emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

APRIL-MAY

Football comes to a halt, as well, due to the Covid-19 pandemic: these are days of pain and sufferance in the whole world and, particularly, in our town of Bergamo.

JUNE

  • 21/6: the team return to the pitch behind closed doors for the rearranged fixture of matchday 25 and defeat Sassuolo 4-1 at the Gewiss Stadium. It is a touching moment when the Club pays tribute to the victims of Covid-19, projecting on the big screen the song “Rinascerò, Rinascerai” that Roby Facchinetti and Stefano D’Orazio of the band Pooh wrote and dedicated to Bergamo.
  • 24/6: a big comeback performed by Gosens, Malinovskyi and Palomino that brings a huge 3-2 success over Lazio who are second on the table. It is the second victory in a row within few days at the Gewiss Stadium. The new record for goals scored in home matches in a single Serie A campaign is set: 40.
  • 26/6: the second 3-2 win in a row, this time in an away match at Udinese. The record of six victories in a row in Serie A is equalled and the new record for goals scored is set: 80.

2020 BEST SAVES

JULY

  • 2/7: the 2-0 win over Napoli sets another record for straight victories of the Club in Serie A: seven.
  • 10/7: the Nyon ballot-box decides for the French champions, Paris Saint-Germain, in the draw of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.
  • 11/7: 2-2 draw at the Stadium of the leaders of Serie A, Juventus, who equalised on 90 with Ronaldo’s penalty, after the goals of Zapata and Malinovskyi. The Nerazzurri are one point away from second place.
  • 21/7: the 1-0 win over Bologna is the 22nd victory in the league, which sets a new absolute record in Serie A in the history of the Club, as well as 74 points scored.
  • 28/7: the 2-1 victory at Parma is the 11th away victory and another record, while 17 consecutive useful results become the best achievement of all time in Seria A in the history of the Club. The new record of 78 points and 98 goals are set in one single campaign in the top flight.

AUGUST

  • 1/8: the championship ends with a match against Inter and, especially, with the third place on the table (equalling the best finish of all time achieved in the last season) and the second qualification in a row for the UEFA Champions League.
  • 12/8: the dream of going into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals fades away into the final minutes: PSG perform a comeback and win 2-1 in Lisbon. There’s regret yes, but also great pride for how the European adventure was lived.


SEPTEMBER

  • 26/9: back on the pitch after a shorter summer break than usual, on the season opener in the league the Nerazzurri perform a comeback to win at Torino, who are beaten 4-2 with goals by Gomez, Muriel, Hateboer and de Roon.
  • 30/9: in the rearranged fixture of matchday 1, Atalanta score four more goals. In Rome, they beat Lazio 4-1 with a performance full of strength.

OCTOBER

  • 4/10: the crackling start continues and on the seasonal debut at the Gewiss Stadium, Cagliari surrender, as they are defeated 5-2. For the first time in the history of the Club, there are three wins in the first three matchdays of Serie A.
  • 21/10: it’s the debut of the season with a victory in the UEFA Champions League with a clear 4-1 win at Midtjylland.
  • 27/10: a big team in the football world and a 2-2 draw performing a comeback against Ajax for the first time in a UEFA Champions League match at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

TOP 20 GOALS 2020

NOVEMBER

  • 8/11: an important point, it ends 1-1 against Inter at the Gewiss Stadium in a hard-fought match.
  • 25/11: a historic moment, thanks to goals from Iličić and Gosens: the Nerazzurri win at Anfield and Liverpool are beaten 2-0.

DECEMBER

  • 9/12: Winning 1-0 in Amsterdam against Ajax with a goal from Muriel in the second half, a historic qualification for the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League is achieved for the second year in a row.
  • 14/12: Nyon’s ballot box draws Real Madrid as our next opponent in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Another clash which, for sure, will enter the history of the Club.
  • 16/12: Freuler scores, Golllini saves Ronaldo’s penalty: in Turin, it ends 1-1 against the Italian champions Juventus.
  • 20/12: it’s the last match of the year at the Gewiss Stadium, which is played with the Christmas Match shirts. Atalanta get an important 4-1 win over Roma.
  • 23/12: 2020 ends with a 2-2 draw for the Nerazzurri in Bologna.
