Ajax will be Atalanta’s opponents on matchday 2 of the 2020-2021 UEFA Champions League Group D on Tuesday 27 October at 21 CET at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo.

They will therefore be an opponent of great prestige and tradition for the first historic match in Bergamo in the top European football competition. Ajax are a football club based in Amsterdam who boast a very rich palmares both nationally and internationally: it is no coincidence that they are the most successful club in the Netherlands. Founded in 1900 very young, Ajax have been Dutch champions 34 times and have won the Dutch Cup 19 times, the Dutch Supercup (Johan Cruiff Schaal) 9 times. Internationally they have won 4 European Cups/Champions Leagues, 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 Uefa Cup, 2 Uefa Super Cups and 2 Intercontinental Cups.

From 1970 to 1973 they were able to win the European Cup for three years in a row and are part of the small group of clubs that have completed the treble and won all UEFA club competitions. In recent years they have also been a finalist of the UEFA Europa League (2016-2017) and semi-finalist of the UEFA Champions League (2018-2019).

In addition to a top-level palmares, Ajax are considered a model club and a symbol of a football tradition known all over the world, able over the years to raise players who have become internationally renowned champions.

The team are coached by Dutchman Erik ten Hag, a former defender who in his coaching career, after his experiences in the youth teams and as assistant coach at Twente and PSV, coached Go Ahead Eagles, Bayern Munich II and Utrecht, before joining Ajax in 2017.

In the last round of the league, Ajax scored a record win at VVV-Venlo with a 13-0 scoreline and now sit on 15 points after six matchdays. In this UEFA Champions League campaign, the Dutch side suffered a home defeat to Liverpool on matchday 1: the 1-0 scoreline was decided by a Tagliafico own goal scored in the first half.
