An overview on the champions of France

Paris Saint-Germain will be Atalanta’s opponent in the 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals scheduled on Wednesday 12th August at 21 CEST at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon, on the 50th anniversary of the birth of the Club which occurred in 1970 with the merger of Paris FC and the Stade Saint-Germain.

The Paris’ club were crowned champions of France on the 30th of April for the ninth time in their history, their third in a row, after the final stop of the league due to the Covid-19 emergency when they were at the top of the table twelve points clear of second-placed Olympique Marseille, having played a game less. They have also won 12 French Cups, 8 League Cups, 9 French Super Cups and 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. With the chance to further improve their palmares before the resumption of the Champions League, still having to play the final of the French Cup against Saint-Etienne (24th July) and the final of the League Cup against Lyon (31st July).

PSG are one of the most important teams of European football and this edition of the Champions League, and can rely on great champions like the Brazilian Neymar, the French Mbappé or the Argentinian Di Maria, just to mention some, without forgetting the Italian midfielder Verratti. The team are coached by the former German defender Thomas Tuchel, on the Paris’s bench since 2018.

THEIR PATH IN THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

PSG were the UEFA Champions League Group A winners on 16 points, five more than Real Madrid, with an important streak: five wins, a draw and no defeats, 17 goals scored and only 2 conceded. In the round of 16, they knocked out Borussia Dortmund, turning the 1st leg’s 2-1 defeat at the German ground into a 2-0 win in the 2nd leg, thanks to Neymar and Bernat.
Atalanta and PSG have never faced each other.
