Gewiss Stadium: Champions League debut

A historic moment for Bergamo

It was a night to remember, a historic moment, an important step in the growth path of the Club. The UEFA Champions League officially landed in Bergamo for the first time in history with the Atalanta-Ajax match. It was in fact the debut for the Gewiss Stadium in the most prestigious club competition in European football. And it was exciting to hear the Champions League anthem and face one of the best teams in the football history like Ajax, in our stadium after the renovation works which allowed the facility to host such an important event. A dream come true. Unfortunately it wasn’t possible to live it together with our fans and our people and, for this reason, our first thought after the comeback goes to those who, even if not on the stands, never lack their support and love for these colours.

Atalanta-Ajax thus rightfully enters the Club’s over one century old history. The last time a European competition match was played in Bergamo was almost thirty years ago: Atalanta 0-0 Inter, first leg of the quarter-finals of the Uefa Cup, played on 6 March 1991.

Next Tuesday it’ll be Champions League time again in Bergamo, with matchday 3 of Group D, when another great team of European football, i.e. Liverpool the champions of England, will be hosted at the Gewiss Stadium.
