On matchday 8 of the 2022-2023 Serie A TIM, Atalanta claim a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina at the Gewiss Stadium.
On the day Gasperini joins Mondonico at 299 games in charge of our team at the top of the all-time coaches’ list in the club’s history, Atalanta rejoin Napoli on top of the table on 20 points.
It was a hard-fought match although there weren’t many chances in the first half. Sportiello smothered Saponara’s and Barak’s efforts at the second attempt on 20 minutes and Atalanta had penalty appeals for a Quarta handball inside the box, which was judged legit by the referee. Koumè was shown the red card for dangerous play on Marten de Roon but the card was then revoked after a VAR on-field review in the 40th minute. Soppy also had an attempt before half-time, but Terracciano palmed the shot away.
The deadlock was broken in the 59th minute thanks to Muriel’s fabulous play, who pulled back from the left for Lookman, who just needed to tap in. On 67 minutes Muriel sent Mæhle clear on goal but the Danish wingback did not manage to beat Terracciano one-on-one. Fiorentina pushed hard looking for an equalizer but Atalanta threatened on counterattacks. Quarta charged down Lookman’s effort on 70 minutes and then Sportiello did well to beat Jovic’s angled drive away.
