2020-2021 review: Marco Sportiello

The season of the Nerazzurri number 57

In the 2020-2021 season, Marco Sportiello played at least one match in all competitions, always being ready and giving his contribution: 21 games played in all competitions (15 in Serie A TIM, 5 in the UEFA Champions League, 1 in the Coppa Italia), 3 clean-sheets.

In the list, he also saved a penalty from Sampdoria’s Quagliarella on matchday 5 and got the satisfaction of having lived as a protagonist many Champions League evenings. In fact, he was used in five of the eight matches played in the top European club competition, including the 2ng leg of the UCL Round of 16 away to Real Madrid. Altogether there were three times in which he kept the clean sheet and all these three important victories curiously arrived away: in the league, he sealed the 1-0 win at Cagliari and 2-0 at Sampdoria, while in the Champions League he secured the 4-0 victory over Midtjylland in Denmark.

Then the official Lega Serie A statistics about the league: 1.329 minutes played in 15 games.

Sportiello’s personal achievements during this season are also many: in October, he played his 100th match in the Nerazzurri shirt in all competitions in the match at Napoli on matchday 4 and then at the end of February, he also hit the landmark of 100 matches in Serie A, always in the Atalanta shirt, in the match won 2-0 away to Sampdoria. He celebrated that achievement with a clean sheet. But the satisfaction also came off the pitch with the birth of his second son Leonardo, just a few hours before that match with Sampdoria.
