The left-footed defender of Bosnian origin with German citizenship was born in Karlsruhe on the 20th of June 1993 and moved his first footballing steps with his hometown Club before joining the Academies of 1899 Hoffenheim first and then VfB Stuttgart.
Upon his signing for Schalke 04, his Bundesliga debut with the Club headquartered in Gelsenkirchen on the 15th of September 2012 was followed shortly after by his first Champions League appearance on the 4th of December 2012 against Montpellier. After playing five seasons with the German side, accruing 123 appearances, with 4 goals scored and 13 assists provided, he joined Arsenal in the 2017 summer transfer window. He scored on his debut with the North London Club in the Community Shield derby against Chelsea eventually won by Arsenal on penalties. After a loan spell between January and June 2021 at Schalke 04 (making 17 appearances, with 1 goal scored and 1 assist provided), he returned to Arsenal where he played the first half of the following season until his move to France on January 2022.
