Gianluca Scamacca has chosen Atalanta for his return to Italy!

The 24-yeras-old Italy international arrives from West Ham on a permanent deal

Atalanta BC are pleased to announce the signing of footballer Gianluca Scamacca on a permanent basis from West Ham United FC.

Born in Rome on the 1st of January 1999, he moved his first footballing steps in the Academy teams of both Capitoline teams (first Lazio and then Roma) before moving to the Netherlands and joining the PSV Eindhoven Youth Academy. Just after turning 17, he made his professional debut for the Lampen second team in Eerst Divisie.

In January 2017 he came back to Italy, after being signed by Sassuolo and drafted into the Primavera side: Scamacca made his mark with the Neroverdi U19s winning the Viareggio Cup, where he scored three goals and slotted in the winning penalty in the final against Empoli.

He made his Serie A debut in the following season, on the 29th of October 2017, being subbed on in the closing minutes of the outing against Napoli. In order to gain playing time and experience, he underwent loan spells at: Cremonese (in Serie B); PEC Zwolle (making his debut in the Eredivisie); Ascoli (where he accrued a tally of 9 goals in the Serie B and 4 in the Coppa Italia, being crowned best scorer of the tournament) and, in the 2020-2021 season, at Genoa, scoring 8 goals in the league (including a goal in the November derby against Sampdoria) and 4 goals in the Coppa Italia, winning the title of best scorer of the tournament for his second year in a row.

After working his way up the ladder, he came back to Sassuolo in the summer of 2021 on the official roster and took Serie A by storm: on the grounds of his 16 goals scored, he imposed himself as the second-best Italian scorer of the 2021/22 season. After signing for West Ham United F.C. last summer, he made a dream debut in a European Club competition scoring in the UEFA Conference League playoff match against Danish side Viborg. In June 2023, on the grounds of West Ham’s victory over ACF Fiorentina, Gianluca was crowned champion of the UEFA Conference League, flaunting a tally of four goals (an average of a goal every 87 minutes) in the tournament. In his stint with The Hammers, Gianluca collected 27 appearances and scored 8 goals in all competitions.

Despite his young age, Scamacca can also flaunt an extensive experience with the Italy National team, having been a regular of Italy’s Under sides. From the Under 15 onwards, Gianluca donned the Azzurri shirt in two U17 Euros, one U19s Euros (scoring 7 goals throughout the tournament, from the qualifying rounds all the way to the final phase, including the extra-time 3-3 equalizer against Portugal in the final) and one U20 World Cup. Additionally, he scored 9 goals in 15 appearances with the U21s, including his two goals in the Final Phase of the Under 21 Euros disputed in May 2021.

A few months later, on the 8th of September 2021, he made his debut with the senior national team in the qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup won by Italy 5-0 over Lithuania.

Atalanta BC would like to extend a warm welcome to Gianluca and wish him the best of luck in his future personal and team endeavours as a Nerazzurro.
