Pašalić’s opener and De Ketelaere’s double seal 3-1 win over Lazio

Sixth home league victory in a row

Yet another success at the Gewiss Stadium: matchday 23 of the 2023-2024 Serie A TIM season saw the Nerazzurri defeated Lazio 3-1 to record their sixth consecutive league win in Bergamo, and seventh including the Coppa Italia.

The Nerazzurri started on the front foot, thwarting a couple of shots in the opening minutes and breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute after Scalvini nodded the ball back to Pašalić, who controlled it with his chest and then volleyed home on the turn. Lazio hit back with a Luis Alberto free-kick that flew inches over, while Gasperini’s men threatened to double their lead when Scalvini’s header was deflected for a corner by Felipe Anderson. Atalanta added another goal when they were awarded a penalty for a Marusic handball: De Ketelaere stepped up and coolly converted the spot-kick to make it 2-0. Holm came close to adding a third in stoppage time, but his header smashed the crossbar.

The Nerazzurri continued to start brightly in the second half, threatening with a team move on four minutes, but Provedel read Holm’s pass perfectly to deny Pašalić. The visitors responded through Isaksen, whose 52nd-minute shot went just wide, while Pašalić’s cross from the left found Miranchuk, who prodded it straight at Provedel. Atalanta’s third goal came courtesy of De Ketelaere, who cut inside from the right and fired into the bottom corner. After Lazio pulled one back through Immobile’s 84th-minute penalty, Mendicino, a graduate of Atalanta’s academy born in 2006, made his Serie A debut in the dying minutes. The match at the Gewiss Stadium ended 3-1 in favour of the Nerazzurri, who remain in fourth place on 39 points.

The squad will now enjoy a day off as training is set to resume on Tuesday afternoon with a behind-closed-doors training session at the Centro Bortolotti in Zingonia.
