Matchday 11 of the 2023-2024 Serie A TIM saw Atalanta come up short at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo as the visitors ran out 2-1 winners.
A well-balanced and hard-fought affair from the get-go saw Ruggeri create the first threat on 21 minutes when his left-foot volley rolled across the face of goal to finish just wide. The deadlock was broken in the 40th minute after the visitors were awarded a penalty after a Musso challenge on Darmian: the spot-kick was converted by Calhanoglu. Minutes later, Musso came to the rescue and beat Calhanoglu’s long-range curler away.
After Dimarco’s strike was just wide in the opening minutes of the second half, Lautaro Martinez’s curler doubled the visitors’ lead in the 57th minute. Atalanta’s reaction was not late in coming, and Lookman intercepted to set up Scamacca, who pulled one back on 61 minutes. While Lookman’s 74th-minute effort from the edge of the box forced a save out of Sommer, Scamacca’s 81st-minute attempt from a rebound was parried by the Inter goalkeeper. In the 83rd minute, the visitors’ counter saw Dumfries have a shot on goal but Musso was well alert. Despite being one man down in the final minutes after Toloi received his second yellow card, Gasperini’s men continued to battle hard and Hateboer had a go in stoppage time, but his header was wide. That being the final chance of the game, the Gewiss Stadium match ended 1-2.
Training will resume on Monday with an afternoon session taking place behind closed doors at the Centro Bortolotti in Zingonia to kick off preparations for the UEFA Europa League match against Sturm Graz.
