Lookman and Scamacca sealed a historic qualification for the UEFA Europa League 2023/24 quarter-finals. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Nerazzurri came from behind to beat Sporting 2-1 in the return leg at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, thanks to second-half goals from Lookman and Scamacca.

The Nerazzurri threatened early on through Scamacca, whose 3rd-minute shot from Miranchuk’s pass went straight at the keeper. In the 12th minute, Djimsiti’s header ricocheted off the top of the crossbar, and two minutes later it was Kolašinać who skimmed the post with a header from Holm. In the 32nd minute, Lookman flicked a ball across the face of goal and over the top of Scamacca’s head, before Sporting made the breakthrough sixty seconds later through Pedro Gonçalves, who collected Gyökeres’ pass and beat the onrushing Musso. Holm attempted to hit back in the 38th minute when he burst into the box and cut inside, only to shoot straight at the goalkeeper.

The Nerazzurri came out of the break determined to get it back on level terms, and they did so in the 46th minute when Éderson’s cross to the back post was met by Lookman who slotted home the equaliser. Atalanta pulled one back in the 59th minute when Miranchuk found Scamacca, whose right-footed shot gave the Sporting goalkeeper no chance. Sporting threatened in the 70th minute through Bragança, whose shot was saved by Musso. In the 86th minute, Musso did well to get off his line to intercept Paullinho’s attempted lob and deny Sporting an equaliser. Although Sporting piled on the pressure in the closing stages, Musso kept out Nuno Santos’ angled drive on 90 minutes and Edwards’ shot was saved. But then the final whistle sounded at the Gewiss Stadium: we are through to the quarter-finals!
