The post denies Lookman: the cup goes to Juventus

An early goal proved decisive

The dream of winning the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa 2023-2024 faded as an early Juventus goal decided the final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The game got off to a difficult start for Atalanta as Juventus took the lead early on through Vlahović, who fired past Carnesecchi. After Gatti had nodded over from a corner on 9 minutes and Rabiot’s finish was weak, the Nerazzurri began to press forward. In the 34th minute, Koopmeiners sent De Ketelaere through on goal, but the Belgian striker’s left-footed shot from the edge of the area was wide. In the 44th minute, Pašalić collected the ball in the box and fired a shot which was blocked by a defender and the referee pointed to the Croatian midfielder for an attacking foul.

In the second half, the Nerazzurri threatened in the 51st minute through Lookman, whose deflected shot went inches wide of the post, and in the 57th minute when Koopmeiners fired wide. El Bilal then turned inside the area but his shot was blocked by the Juventus defence. At the other end, De Roon came to the rescue in the 64th minute with a desperate clearance from Vlahovic. The Nerazzurri came close to equalising in the 71st minute when Ruggeri’s cross was met by Miranchuk, who got the first touch on the ball but fired over. Vlahovic had a 73rd-minute goal ruled out for offside by VAR, while Lookman went close in the 80th minute, only to see his shot hit the post with the goalkeeper beaten. Juve also hit the woodwork four minutes later when Miretti’s shot smacked against the crossbar. The Nerazzurri pushed hard in the final minutes in search of a way through, especially through Éderson, whose 94th-minute effort was unfortunately parried by Perin. With that being the last chance of the game, the Coppa Italia went to Juventus.
