A goal scored in full stoppages at the Stadio Arechi in Salerno gave the hosts three points on matchday 35 of the 2022-2023 Serie A TIM.
A hard-fought first half was played in the presence of pouring rain and strong wind. The first chance of the game was Pašalić’s header from a corner on 7 minutes that was straight at the goalkeeper, then a threatening Soppy cross was turned over by Pirola and a Zapata header that ended over the bar. Gasperini’s men grew into the game and tested Ochoa with an Éderson scorcher from distance on 27 minutes. The best chance of the first 45 minutes was Zapata’s diving header, which skimmed the post.
The second half opened with Højlund hitting the pitch, while Soppy came off injured within seconds and was replaced by Okoli. In the 56th minute, Dia was clear on goal but fired over when in front of Sportiello. One minute later, Sportiello intercepted a cross but only managed to beat it away and Piatek’s diving header from the rebound was off target. When things seemed to be set for a goalless draw, Candreva broke the deadlock by slotting into the far bottom corner from the edge of the box on 93 minutes, earning the hosts the three points.
