2020-2021 review: Matteo Pessina

The season of the Nerazzurri number 32

He’s been continuously improving and working hard and the icing on the cake to the season was his call-up to EURO2020. Matteo Pessina returned to base to leave a mark in the 2020-2021 season: he played 40 matches in all competitions (28 in Serie A TIM, 7 in the UEFA Champions League, 5 in the Coppa Italia). He scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists. As for the League, he contributed to two 5-goal wins, having scored the second goal at home against Sassuolo (5-1) and Parma (5-2). But the most magical night for him to remember forever was the second leg of the Coppa Italia semifinal: his double was decisive for the qualification to the final that allowed Atalanta to win 3-1 against Napoli. A curious fact: he provided both his assists against Udinese, the former in the away match and the latter at home. So, here is the official League’s statistics of the Lega Serie A: 1.716 minutes played in total, 9,935 km run on average per match, 19 shots, 9 goalscoring chances, 6 key passes, 22 fouls suffered, 47 ball recoveries.

Finally, Matteo reached some important personal goals this seasons such as his debut in the Champions League in the first group match against Midtjylland, his debut for the national team in the friendly match against Estonia in November and his first goals for the Azzurri (a double in the friendly match against San Marino at the end of May) and his call-up to the national team coached by Mancini for EURO2020.
