Atalanta breaking records vs. Salernitana

From 8 goals scored to 7 different players on target

The spectacular 8-2 walkover against Salernitana has already and rightfully been enshrined in the history of the Club, owing to the various records broken – in addition to the whole host of new ones. First and foremost, for the first time in their history, Atalanta scored 8 goals during the course of a single Serie A match: although Atalanta had already registered a match won with an eight-goal lead once, again under Gasperini’s tenure (namely, on the 2nd of August of 2018, on the occasion of the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round won 8-0 away against Sarajevo), such an outcome had never occurred to the Black-and-blues in Italy’s top football division before.

Additionally, 80 years have passed since Atalanta last scored five goals within the first half; with the latest and only precedent in the history of the Club dating back to an Atalanta-Napoli fixture played back in November 1941: here too, the first half came to its close with the home side ahead 5 to 1 (which turned out to be the final result of the game).

Moreover, the 7 different scorers in a single match (namely, Boga, Scalvini, Koopmeiners, Højlund, Éderson, Zortea and Lookman, twice) have also set a first in the history of Serie A: a significant record celebrating the group coached by Gasperini.

Whereas both Éderson and Nadir Zortea found their goal-scoring debuts for Atalanta, Jérémie Boga has finally netted his first Serie A goal while donning Atalanta’s colours, after having already scored last season in both the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Europa League.

Thanks to our three new entries, Atalanta can now count 15 different scorers in Serie A matches, thus overtaking Milan and Napoli (both tied at 14 each) in this special ranking. Across Europe’s Big 5 Leagues, only Olympique Marseille can flaunt better numbers this season (with 16).

In terms of good news, this match is a gift that keeps on giving: with Rasmus Højlund holding the title for the youngest player to have scored four goals in the current Serie A season, Ademola Lookman already besting his personal scoring record in a single season, with a tally of 9 goals so far (improving on the 8 netted in last season during his spell for Leicester in all competitions), Giorgio Scalvini netting his second goal of the season, and Teun Koopmeiners incrementing his goals tally yet again, with 6 goals against 4 last season.
