Liverpool v Atalanta: the 1st leg of the UEL Quarter-finals in stats

Another remarkable win at Anfield

With the night’s 3-0 win at Anfield, Atalanta claimed their second historic win by the red side of the Mersey after the  UEFA Champions League 2-0 triumph back in November 2020.

As underscored by Stats Perform’s Opta Facts, Atalanta are now the third-ever team claiming 2 or more European wins on Liverpool’s turf after Barcelona and Real Madrid (with two wins each). Moreover, amidst all Liverpool’s European home challengers who have faced the Reds at least twice in Anfield, the Nerazzurri are the only contenders with a flawless winning run of 2 victories out of two. After 2 draws and two losses, the Merseyside game marks Atalanta’s very first win in the UEFA CUP/Europa League quarterfinals. Lastly, not only have Atalanta extended their unbeaten run to 9 consecutive Continental games (namely, 6 wins and 3 draws) in a Club’s historic first; but the Nerazzurri can flaunt the highest away goal tally in the current Europa League season up to date (12).

Surely one of the poster boys of the night’s 3-0 win with his brace, Gianluca Scamacca is the first player in the history of Atalanta to have scored in four back-to-back European appearance. With his 5 nets so far in the Europa League, the black-and-blue number 90 has now reached Josip Ilicic’s record (dating back to the 2019/20 Champions League) for best Atalanta scorer in a single season of European football. Additionally, Gianluca has now become both the first Italian player to net a brace at Anfield in European competitions and the first Italian players to have scored in four consecutive knockout Continental games since Giuseppe Rossi, who stopped at five with Villareal back in the 2010/11 UEL campaign.

Courtesy of Mario Pašalić, the 3-0 goal that sew up the Liverpool game was also SuperMario’s 5oth Atalanta goal in all competitions – as a further bonus, the Croatian mid embellished his personal milestone with his very first Europa League net. Now standing at two seasonal key passes in the UEL, Davide Zappacosta has bested his former personal records (having previously provided one assist both during his stint at Chelsea back in 2018/19 and with Atalanta in the 2021/22 campaign). Closing off with Charles De Ketelaere the Belgian provided his first key-pass in the Europa League – his second overall after the one dating to his Club Brugge days in the Champions League game v Liepzig back on September 28 2021.
