UEFA Europa League: hosting Sporting CP at the Gewiss Stadium

After the 1-2 win in Lisbon, Group D MD5 kicks off on November 30

Matchday 5 of Group D will see Atalanta host Sporting Clube de Portugal at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo for the last UEFA Europa League home match of the 2023/24 season, scheduled for Thursday the 30th of November and to kick-off at 18:45 CET.

After 11 Primeira Liga matches the team has accrued 28 points on the grounds of 9 wins and 1 draw, sharing the championship lead with Benfica. The team coached by Rúben Amorim flaunts the second-best offensive side of the league with 23 goals to its name. After losing 2-1 away to Benfica in the “Dérbi de Lisboa” last week, Os Leões will face Atalanta after defeating Dumiense 8-0 in the Taça de Portugal fourth round played at the Alavalade Stadium on Sunday. As far as the UEFA Europa League Group D is concerned, the Portuguese team have 7 points and are second in the standings.

Previous encounter(s): The upcoming match will mark the fourth encounter between the teams, in addition to the Alvalade clash in October, the previous ones both happened in the Cup Winners’ Cup. The former dates to the 63/64 season, coinciding with Atalanta’s first-ever European appearance: while the Nerazzurri won 2-0 in Bergamo in the 1st leg courtesy of Calvanese and Domenghini, they suffered a 3-1 defeat in Portugal (with Christensen featuring on the scoresheet for Atalanta). In the tie-breaker played in Barcelona, Atalanta came off worst with another 3-1 loss –with Nova scoring.
