Road to the UCL last 8: an update on PSG

Won the league and two national cups

Just a few days left before the kick-off of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League quarter-final match scheduled for Wednesday 12 August at 21 CEST at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica in Lisbon against Paris Saint-Germain, who on Friday 31 July completed their national treble. After winning the league and the thirteenth French Cup in their history by beating 1-0 St-Étienne in the final on 24 July, PSG also lifted their ninth League Cup after beating Lyon on penalties at the end of a very tight final: no goals between regulation and extra time, then from the spot Thomas Tuchel’s team were more precise and won with a score of 6-5. Pablo Sarabia’s converted penalty and Keylor Navas’s save on Bertrand Traorè were decisive. After the cups, the French side faced Sochaux in a friendly match on Wednesday 29 July, winning 1-0 (goal by Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting) and rehearsing for the Champions League match.

THEIR PATH IN THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

PSG were the UEFA Champions League Group A winners on 16 points, five more than Real Madrid, with an important streak: five wins, a draw and no defeats, 17 goals scored and only 2 conceded. In the round of 16, they knocked out Borussia Dortmund, turning the 1st leg’s 2-1 defeat at the German ground into a 2-0 win in the 2nd leg, thanks to Neymar and Bernat. Atalanta and PSG have never faced each other.
