Zapata’s goal at the Benito Stirpe in Frosinone didn’t prove enough for Atalanta in Week 2 of the 2023-2024 Serie A TIM, as the hosts claimed a 2-1 victory and took home the three points.
It was a shocking start for Atalanta, as the hosts took the lead through Harroui within 5 minutes. After Zapata tried to lead Atalanta’s comeback but shot over, the Nerazzurri had the chance to level up the match in the 17th minute when Koopmeiners rolled across the face of goal for Zappacosta, who came sliding in at the back post but fired off target. Monterisi doubled the Frosinone lead on 23 minutes and seven minutes later, the Gialloblù defender blocked Zappacosta’s attempt from inside the area.
The second half saw De Ketelaere and Zortea come off the bench. The Nerazzurri tried to up the game and this resulted in Zapata halving the deficit in the 56th minute after the Colombian striker was back to goal, spun and smashed into the near bottom corner to beat Cerofolini. With this net, the Cafetero has now joined Cristiano Doni at 69 goals, becoming Atalanta’s all-time top scorer in Serie A. In the 69th minute, Atalanta had a great chance to equalize, as De Ketelaere and Scamacca combined to send Scalvini clear, whose effort was straight at the goalkeeper. After De Ketelaere tested Cerofolini in the 75 minute and Scamacca’s header was inches over the crossbar in the 84th minute, the final whistle echoed at the Stadio Stirpe to seal the 2-1 victory for Frosinone.
