2020-2021 review: Luis Muriel

The season of the Nerazzurri number 9

He’s the best Nerazzurri goalscorer and he also set his personal goalscoring record. The 2020-2021 season was very satisfying for Luis Muriel: he played 48 matches in total in all the competitions (36 in Serie A TIM, 7 in the UEFA Champions League, 5 in the Coppa Italia), scored 26 goals and provided 11 assists. He’s the second Atalanta player for the number of appearances and his famous dance after each goal became a must of this season. It’s difficult to choose his best goal because all the goals played an important role in achieving the team’s target. But, of course, a special mention deserves the one that was scored in Amsterdam that brought a victory over Ajax and guaranteed a spot in the Champions League round of 16. Luis scored his 26 goals in 22 matches (four of them were doubles), 18 of these matches were won by Atalanta. Only one goal, the one against Real Madrid, didn’t help to get a result but it was a historic goal, anyway, because of the prestige and the fame of the opponent.

Here are the official League statistics of the Lega Serie A: 1.533 minutes played in total, 5,929 km run on average per match, 22 goals (the third player in the top scorers ranking, with a goal scored every 69,7 minute), 9 assists, 226 ball recoveries (the third player in the squad ranking), 84 shots, 47 goal chances, 16 key passes.

Muriel also achieved important personal goals: he was awarded as MVP by the Lega Serie A for April, twice as the Player of the Month (in December and in February) by the Nerazzurri fans on the official social accounts and he was named in the Colombia squad for the upcoming Copa América.
