UCL, our next opponents: Valencia

The Spanish team are Group H winners

Valencia, next opponent in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 2019-2020, are a Spanish club, based in Valencia, a city of the South-East coast of Spain. In 2019 they celebrated their 100th anniversary, in which they won six Spanish premier league titles, eight Copa del Rey titles and one Spanish Supercup. In European competitions, they won one UEFA Cup, two Inter-Cities Fairs Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and one UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Valencia qualified on top spot, as winner of Group H with 11 points, beating Chelsea, Ajax and Lille: Matchday 6 away win against Ajax was decisive for overtaking the Dutch side in the standings.

In the last season, Valencia finished fourth in La Liga, winning for their eighth time in their history La Copa del Rey, thanks to a 2-1 win over Barcelona in the finals which took place in Sevilla last 25th May. They are in eighth position in the table at the moment with 27 points, tie with Athletic Bilbao, having equalised 1-1 at home against Real Madrid on 15th December.

Manager of Valencia is Albert Celades, a Spanish former midfielder who also played for Barcelona and Real Madrid in the past. Celades replaced Marcelino at the beginning of September. In the past he was manager of the Spanish youth team, until U21, and was appointed assistant coach of Real Madrid.

The venue that will host Valencia home competitions is the Mestalla, which can contain up to 50 thousands people.

In August 2017, there was a precedent in the Naranja Trophy played in Valencia, in which the Nerazzurri won 2-1 through Toloi and Palomino (the starting XI of that match in the opening photo of this news).
