UCL: the city and the stadium of Villarreal

Vila-real and the Estadio de la Cerámica

THE CITY

The official name of the city, in Valencian, is Vila-real (Villarreal in Spanish). The city has only a little more than 50.000 inhabitants and is located in the province of Castellón. It is situated in the “comarca” (the territory division that consists of different cities of the same province) of Plana Baixa. The city is located 7 km to the South from the Province of Castellón de la Plana’s administrative centre and at 42 m above sea level.

Vila-real is famous for its flourishing industry related to producing azulejos which are typical ceramic tiles that are not very thick and have a glazed surface. Villarreal is known around the world for its azulejos and for its football team, Villarreal Club de Fútbol.

THE STADIUM

The Estadio de la Cerámica is the home venue of Villarreal. The Campo del Villarreal got the name of El Madrigal (in honour of the rural lands on which it was erected) in 1925 and was given its current name in 2017.

The capacity of the structure, which was built in 1923 and renovated many times in the following decades, is 25.000 seats. Nicknamed El feudo amarillo, it is located at Plaza Labrador, 5 km away from the Mediterranean Sea.
